Overweight is not as big a killer as thought. According to a new analysis it ranks # 7 -- not # 2 on the list of leading preventable causes of death. This new calculation is from the CDC.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now estimates that a few extra pounds accounts for 25,814 deaths a year in the US. In January, the CDC used an estimate 14 times higher -- 365,000 deaths. The new analysis affirms that being extremely obese is indisputably lethal. However, as several recent smaller studies found, people who are modestly overweight actually have a lower risk of death than those of normal weight.
Using the new calculation, being somewhat over weight dropped from # 2 as the leading cause of preventable death after smoking. It now sits at # 7 -- behind car crashes and guns.
It may now be possible for more people to understand that it is healthier to relax, enjoy food, and gain a few pounds over the decades. The stress reduction may be more healthy than a weight reduction. The satisfied lifestyle may be healthier than the dieter's stress-filled weight watching.
