Informing her
NBC morning viewers of her move to CBS, Katie Couric looked into the
camera and said, "I really feel that we have become friends over the
years". |
|
Is
it conceivable that she could possibly have deceived herself in
believing that we are so needy, weak-minded, and lonesome that we
look to TV for friends? ...And, then, in our stupors, we
would consider anyone so obviously phony as she, a friend? |
|
Addressing CBS' annual affiliates'
convention, Couric predicted that the "pretentious era" of
evening-news anchors is coming to an end. She said, "The audience is
more sophisticated than we give them credit for -- they don't want a
mechanical Ted Baxter... I'm a serious, caring, compassionate
person. I hope that comes out... People want a multidimensional
[anchor] and not someone they can put in a box." |
|
Couric continued, "We need to be
more level with viewers and explain the issues in a plain-spoken
way." |
|
She added that she hopes to be
"humanistic, more accessible" in her anchoring. |
|
Katie Couric will take over the anchor
and managing editor positions "CBS Evening News" in September, 2006. |
|
After she learns what
"pretentious" means, she should try to attach substantive meanings
to the words "humanistic" and accessible" in the context of a news
broadcast. |
